HDOT postpones action at Dillingham Airfield due to COVID-19

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division has notified tenants of Dillingham Airfield the termination of their permit at the facility has been rescinded due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. HDOT’s goal is to terminate the lease with the U.S. Army by June 30, 2021 and expects that all tenant permits will be terminated by that date at the latest. Tenants may use this additional time to make alternative arrangements. All terms, conditions, and requirements of the tenants’ permits remain in effect.
SSA was part of the working group lobbying for more time to address the imminent closure of Dillingham by the HDOT. AOPA assembled a working group including SSA, EAA, USPA, several Hawaii legislative representatives, and other interested parties to work the problem. That group will continue to work the issue: the long term plan being to create an Airport Authority to replace HDOT as the sponsor for Dillingham. That will require legislative action. The working group will continue monitoring the situation and address any other issues related to HDOT’s actions regarding Dillingham.
