I received the following from the FAA regarding a revision of 8900.1.
“The FAA have updated a lot of guidance (for inspectors and Designees) associated with certification, operations in aircraft with Experimental Airworthiness certificates etc.
I looked at new guidance for the issuance of experimental aircraft training LODAs and was not surprised that a couple of “Styles” of experimental airworthiness were not eligible for LODAs – – FAA Order 8900.1 Vol 3, Chap 1, Sect. 1. No big surprise there….
However – in a related updated that applies to certification (8900.1 Vol 5, Chap 2, Sect. 1 [Para. 5-219} where they discuss examiners and Inspectors doing test in experimental airworthiness aircraft, they specifically state that “Air Racing” experimental certificates may not be used. I know there are some clubs that use experimental airworthiness certificated aircraft and most of what I see is both exhibition and air racing. However, if there airworthiness certificated gliders at these clubs that are just air racing, they may not be used for airmen certification testing.”
Therefore experimental aircraft certified as both “Exhibition and racing” are acceptable, but not if they are certified as “racing” or “Air Racing” only.
