2011 - My goals

I've never 'blogged' before, and this seems like a good place to start.

I took my first flying lesson in June of 2001.  I was pretty much the antithesis of a 'natural'.  My instructor (Jay McDaniel, Region 11 director) probably considered telling me I would be better off collecting coins, but he was a pretty new CFIG at the time, and continued trying to teach me.  Eventually I 'got it' and things got better.

In November of 2003, I bought a Grob Speed Astir II.  It is by far the best money I've ever spent in my life.  Since then, I've flown it 700 hours.  I've logged 33,880 kilometers of 'XC' since I got a logger in 2007.

About the Speed Astir:  I rig and derig a lot.  After the first couple times struggling to get the wings on, I figured out what has to line up, and how to line it up.  The Speed Astir (I think all Grobs, actually) has a reputation of being difficult to rig. I disagree. My Speed Astir rigs as quickly as ANY glider at Jean, and more quickly than most of them.

I flew a LOT of flights in 2010.  75 launches for 168 hours of flying, and 10,444 kilometers of XC logged.  I spent more money on soaring in 2010 than in any previous year, except 2003, when I bought my Speed Astir.

In 2011, one of my goals is to fly LESS.  I'm going to try to pick my days better, and fly BIG flights more often.

Another goal:  Capture the PASCO egg.  The egg has been passed around the northern end of Region 11 for a while now.  I think it needs to come down south.

Long term goal:  3 Diamonds in one flight, using the 'Death Valley Dive' to get low enough to get Diamond altitude without busting 18k.

UPDATE: 6 May 2011

I'm  a partner in a Janus C now!  It needs work, but I think it will be worth it.  Here's a link to a video of the gelcoat removal:

Wing gelcoat stripping continues.  On Sunday (8 May 2011) Shrek and I stripped 90% of the gelcoat off the left main wing panel.
