Region 5 South - First report after 2 days of rain.

The Region 5 South contest is underway after Tropical storm Colin made it's appearance this week.

Our pre-practice day on Saturday went well with some new ground crew members. Winners for the day in Sports Class was Tim McGowin (2EZ) going 113 hanicapped miles at 50.94 mph, in FAI Combined was Fernando Silva achieving 125 miles at 46.28 mph.

After launching the small number of sailplanes on runway 23 we had to get all the cars and ground handling gear back to the main parking area.  Everyone grabed a car and headed back.  Andreea, our fearless Contest Manager, got the Mercedes SUV of Fernando Silva and parked it right next to FS's trailer.  Feeling that our work was done, everyone retreated to the air conditioning of the contest trailer. Upon venturing outside, Andreea noticed Fernando's car was nose first into the fence that happened to be down hill from where the car was parked earlier.  Being ever the gentleman, Fernando forgave the mishap but it should be noted, it rained for the next 2 days!

The weather for today is expected to get better after the morning gloom.  We gridded at 12:30 and waited for the sun to do her magic.  Wally Berry in his trusty Libelle was launced as the sniffer at 1:25 and was joined by the remaining Sports Class shortly after.  Early reports spoke of 3 knot climbs to 4,000 feet.
