Region 5 North - 21 April report

Today’s weather was in some ways the inverse of yesterday’s: a beautiful cumulus-filled sky suffered an invasion by mid-level clouds, and soaring conditions rapidly deteriorated.  Pilots responded appropriately to conditions well below what they’d been told to expect, and there were only a few outlandings.  But speeds were well below what nearly everyone had expected.

Probably the day’s outstanding flight was by Dick Butler, who covered 148 miles in just over 2 hours, for a speed of 74 mph.  Unfortunately, he had the task time wrong – the minimum was actually 2:30.  This reduced his scored speed to 61 mph – but that was still enough to take first place for the day.
