Standard and 15 Meter Nationals - Contest Day 2

15m/Standard Nationals - Elmira NY
Contest Day 2

Today’s weather was nice and quiet compared to yesterday’s dynamics. Dense fog burned off by mid-morning and from noon on we had a sky filled with cu. Temperatures reached the high 80s, but it was a little bit drier than previous days. Cloud bases reached 6000-7000ft.

Conditions were expected to be best to the west of us, so both classes were sent out on a 3 hr TAT to Perry-Warsaw and then down to Mansfield Bridge, with 15 mi circles on both turnpoints.

The two key factors today were the blue holes at both turnpoints and the dishonest clouds. Although there were plenty of cu, some yielded weak lift while others were as good as 6kt. Most pilots avoided the blue holes and did not go deep into both circles.

John Seymour [SM] and Fernando Silva [FS] glided through the blue to find cloud streets on the far side of the Perry-Warsaw circle and rode them all the way up to Batavia (Genesee Airport), where SM first learned to fly. That risk paid off as SM and FS placed 1 & 2 in the 15m race. SM smokes the field with a speed of 61.72mph over 189.13 miles to move up to 4th overall. Dave Springford claims the top 15m spot. Phil Gaisford handily wins his class (49.06mph/152.03mi handicapped) to leap over Hank Nixon for first in the Standards.

Tonight we had our first dinner at the Youth Camp. Visitors included Helga Gertsen and daughter Linda Evenski, Rick and Ann Lafford, and Dale and Carmen Kramer.
