Sports Class Nationals - Day 5 F1 Report

Good evening race fans! Today proved to be a great day of soaring here in Texas. The morning weather was looking pretty good although there was some question about some high cirrus that was moving through. This lead the task committee to choose a mid-sized MAT instead of the Assigned Task that most of the Club pilots were hoping for. We had 3 points assigned, first down south by Waco, then east to the north of Corsicana, then back to Itasca on I-35. The assigned distance added up to about 145 miles.

The first leg featured a nice street leading to the turnpoint and many of us had a lot of fun flying together. I know I enjoyed hanging with the pack as long as I could while they all passed me. Conditions were predictably softer to the east but there was still some decent lift when you could find it. Omri Kalinsky (11H) had trouble on the second leg though and landed out. The run back west showed conditions steadily improving with each mile traveled west.

It worked out that even the slowest of us were fast enough to use up the assigned turnpoints in about 3 hours so we all had at least an hour to roll our own turnpoints before finishing. Many pilots once again stuck with the reliable I-35 corridor, some going as far south as West, TX. I ran out to Lake Whitney Bridge and then back for a finish at 43 mph raw.  Danny Sorenson smoked the Club Class with 63 mph raw in his Discus.

Modern Class finally showed a bit of variety in that Ken Sorenson did NOT win the day! Dave Martin was acutally about a tenth of a mile per hour slower than Ken but made up for it in the handicap to take 1000 points for the day. Well done!
