Standard Class Nationals - Early afternoon report

It's the first day of competition at Chilhowee Gliderport in eastern Tennessee.  We have a small but eager field: 11 pilots in the Standard Class Nationals, and seven in the Region 5 West contest.

Late August weather here can incline either to summer or autumn conditions; just now, it's very much the former.  We have hot, humid, hazy conditions which look to produce a couple of days of challenging soaring.  A weak cold front is said to be slowly approaching from the northwest - if and when it arrives we can expect conditions more pleasant both on the ground and in the air.

The forecast today is for weak lift to something like 3000 - 4000' (altitude heavily dependent on temperature, itself dependent on the extent of high clouds).  Both classes have Turn-Area tasks that skirt the high ground to the east.
