Region 9 Super Regional Moriarty Club/Modern Class - Friday, June 15, 2012 - Fifth Contest Day (preliminary)

Forecast was very similar to Thursday, calling for clear skies, mild winds, high thermals to 16k-18k.  But high cirrus moved into the area between Moriarty and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains around grid time, prompting the contest committee to scale back the day's task slightly.  The turn area task specified turn cylinders at Lincoln Station (30 mi radius), I40 & Hwy 84 (30 mi radius), the Santa Fe Ski Area (30 mi radius) and Manzano Peak (30 mi radius) for a minimum distance of 135 miles, nominal of 327 miles and maximum of 570 miles.  The minimum task time was 3 hours for the club and 3 hours 30 minutes for modern class.

Once again Jim Cumiford (RX) claimed the top spot in Modern Class in his ASW-27 earning 1000 points for a handicapped speed of 82.95 mph over a distance of 290.15 miles.  David Leonard (ZL), also in an ASW-27, came in second due to a finish penalty with 994 points for a speed of 82.96 mph and a distance of 293.70 miles.  Both Jim and David posted raw speeds of over 94 mph.  Bif Huss (H7) brought up third in his Discus 2b with a speed of 79.45 mph over a distance of 303.72 miles.

In the club class Bob Faris (BF) came in first in his LS-3-15 with 1000 points for a handicapped speed of 74.61 over 243.18 miles.  Brian Resor (UX) came in second in his ASW-20C-15 with 910 points for a speed of 67.90 mph over a distance of 209.83 miles.  And Ronald Leonard (4A) brought up third in his HP-18 for a speed of 67.62 mph and a distance of 213.48 miles.

Two competitors in each class fell out at the start and had to relaunch, thus getting a very late start on the day.  None the less, the day ended with only one land out, William Mathews (SG) in his Discus CS at Zorro Ranch.
