Region 9 Super Regional Moriarty Club/Modern Class - Tuesday, June 12, 2012 - Second Contest Day

The forecast called for wet, east winds in the morning with a high chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.  The contest committee called a turn area task that sent the competitors to turn cylinders southeast at Abo (radius 15 mi), north to Cochiti Dam (radius 30 mi), south east to Leyba (radius 15 mi) then south to a road (radius 15 mi).  Minimum distance for the task was 145 miles, nominal was 273, and maximum was 405 miles.  Minimum time was 2 hours and 30 minutes for Club class and 3 hours for Modern.

Dry air to the west over the Manzano Mountains was working, but as competitors headed east towards the third turn point, the day seemed to die  suddenly, and all of Estancia Valley turned into a black hole that seemed to eat sailplanes.

Geof Aiken (MQ) landed out at Patterson Ranch.  Brian Resor (UX) landed out at Zorro Ranch.  Paul Briggs (7B) and Tomasz Ciesielski (7UP) both landed out at Estancia Airport.

They were in good company.  Four out of the five Air Force entries also landed out at Estancia: Major Todd Salzwedel and C3C Timothy Nealy in 4AF, Major Eric Ujfalusy and C3C Matthew Gutgesell in 5AF, C2C Thomas Swinchoski in 7AF, and C2C Robert Gasper in 8AF.  The last Air Force sailplane, C1C Ryan Moran in 6AF, landed out at Sandia East.

David Leonard (ZL) edged out Jim Cumiford for the number one spot in the Modern class gaining 811 points for a handicapped speed of 71.02 mph over a distance of 218.48 miles in his ASW-27.  Jim Cumiford (RX), also in an ASW-27 finished the task in under the minimum time and also incurred a finish penalty but still managed to amass 805 points for a speed of 72.93 mph over a distance of 218.14 miles. Bif Huss (H7) brought up third garnering 749 points for a speed of 65.51 mph and 236.27 miles.

Bob Faris (BF) once again won the day in the club class in his LS-3-15 gaining 779 points for a handicapped speed of 60.22 mph over a distance of 193.54 miles.  Ron Leonard (4A) brought up second in his HP-18 gaining 771 points with a speed of 59.60 mph and a distance of 168.24 miles.  And Joe Brack (DB) came in third in his LS-4A winning 674 points for a speed of 52.11 mph and a distance of 150.60.
