Open Class Nationals - Day 1 - 40 Year Anniversary

It was forty years ago that Minden hosted its first national championships. The winner of that contest was Ray Gimmey and although Ray did not have a great Day 1 today he is far from out of the hunt.

Another entrant of notoriaty is the 15m, 440 lb Duckhawk, piloted by Chip Garner.

This is my first time to Minden, and I am fortunate to have not only the regular weathermeister Stewart but also Doug Armstrong who also did the weather for the 1972 Nationals. Their extensive local knowledge has bee a great help in selecting tasks.

Yesterday's weather looked like if we didn't get an early start the wind might break things up for the late starters. Ultimately the wind didn't cause as much trouble as we feared.

Rick Walters with Pete Alexander in the Arcus took the day at 81 mph over 283 miles. Rick Indebro and Chip Garner in 15m ships took second and third respectively, leaving the remaining big wingers behind.
