Air Sailing Sports Class Contest - Day 1 at the Air Sailing Sports Class Contest

We are under the influence of an approaching trough from the pacific northwest, bringing very dry, windy conditions to the Reno area.  The Air Force Academy is here in full force with two Discus-2 and two Duo's. The local pilots have a tall order to uphold Air Sailing's honor to keep the trophy home this time.  We called a 2.5 hr MAT, and I secretly hoped most gliders would head south, and a few did.  Pilots reported choppy, rough lift to about 11,500, with occasionally better lift over the valleys than in the high ground.  5AF won the day with a flight of 164 miles, going, of all places, north!

Forcast for tomorrow is for cooler, windier.  Not our usual great soaring, but a good test for all the competitors.
