18-Meter Nationals - June 19 Report

Hi race fans,

I will be posting contest meetings and reports on YouTube. If you have any questions or problems, please get in touch.

It was a long pilots meeting in which it was decided that we wouldn't fly today. Over half of the contestants had landed out yesterday and we had considerable rain last night which again made the field very wet. The day turned out to be interesting in that it appeared to be a decent soaring day. Conditions still not that great but tomorrow the field will be dried out and we'll have a good day.

Elliott Martin had his first glider training ride today by Caesar Creek Soaring Club  instructor John Lubon. Elliott is crewing for his uncle Bill, who won yesterday, and was featured on an earlier video. He took his first filght in Bruce Helvie's ship. One of our 2-33s that have been so popular with our training. I think it would be a good focus for my article in SOARING to tell the saga of the contest through the eyes of this young man who took his first tow today. As Linda has asked each of the pilots in the contest to introduce themselves by telling their similar story, the combination of Elliott's experience along with the experiences of each of the contestants would make for a unique perspective. The blow by blow, point by point, devaluation by devaluation, who you can pick off story, the meat of each contest, is the contestants perspective but one told best by the scores and those would can interpret them, yours not being one of them. Maybe the contest from the eyes of a 13 year old will make for good encouragement for other youngsters. Let me know. Thanks for all the suport of the YouTube experience. It's the future. As the future of soaring in all the digital age discussed in the pilot's meeting this morning.
