Get ‘Em Flying: WWII Military Training Glider Operations and Their Post-War Legacy – Colin and Brodie Henderson

Presentations

As war loomed on the global horizon in early 1941, the United States quickly realized that the development of its own combat glider forces would be a vital component of future aerial warfare. Seeking the expertise of accomplished sailplane pilots within the SSA, as well as leveraging the small number of existing, domestic sailplane manufacturers, the Army Air Forces rapidly established its glider program. Join Colin and Brodie to discover how the expeditious rollout of civilian-derived training syllabi and sailplanes (TG-1/2/3/4), months before the full development of large combat cargo gliders and military tactics, surprisingly led to the almost immediate obsolescence of these early military training gliders. Interestingly, however, they ultimately provided the crucial foundation for a robust, post-war civilian glider training fleet, supported by a new approach to flight instruction.

Taming the Graveyard Spiral – John Crawford

OSTIV

The Graveyard Spiral doesn’t happen often, but it’s dangerous. In bad visibility, a pilot with no gyro instruments, or if unskilled in their use, has little hope of recovering control of a spiraling aircraft. Most training concentrates on avoiding it in the first place, but I would like to argue here for a different approach: that airbrakes, flaps, or even crossed controls, can stabilize the aircraft. John will spend a few minutes explaining why this behavior is to be expected on physical and aerodynamic grounds, and then present a series of videos showing that it really works, in different categories and types. His intention is to assemble a group of pilots from all over the planet to assess it, de-bug it, and hopefully publicize it throughout the world of aviation.

10:00 am - 10:45 am

Flying Cross-Country in a Classic Glider – Kristin Farry

Presentations

Yes, you can fly cross-country in a classic glider with low performance. Many pilots appreciate the challenge of flying a piece of soaring history. For others, the only soaring option is a vintage glider, club or private. This presentation will explain bridging the gap between your Bronze Badge and cross-country flying on a budget. It will cover incrementally building cross-country skills and the special challenges of flying and retrieving a vintage glider.

What Your Crew Wants to Know - Tips and Tricks for Your Next Retrieve - Leah Condon

Presentations

Retrieves are part of gliding. Sometimes they are expected but usually they aren’t part of the plan. Whether a free distance flight, a contest pilot who lawn darts on a weak day, or a recreational pilot who experiences a rope break, retrieves are something that all pilots should prepare for. Leah has been retrieving wayward glider pilots from fields and airports around the world since 2006 and has logged over 40 off airport retrieves. She will share what information the retrieve desk or your crew actually needs to know along with providing tips to make your next retrieve smoother.

OGN data is collected automatically from gliders equipped with FLARM, ADS-B, or an OGN specific transmitter. Data is received by OGN base stations setup by clubs and commercial operators around the world. While the original purpose was to provide real-time flight tracking of gliders, can this data also be used determine the number of launches and flight hours needed to determine the U.S. glider accident rate? An experiment using data collected at 2 sites in the U.S. has been conducted and this presentation presents those results.

Flight Not Improbable - Octave Chanute and the Worldwide Race Toward Flight – Simine Short

OSTIV

The “Flying Man,” Otto Lilienthal, demonstrated in the early 1890s that man can fly with artificial wings, but his success depended on constant body movement, requiring strength, flexibility, agility, coordination and endurance. After studying Lilienthal’s effort, Octave Chanute wanted his flying machine to be perfectly manageable, automatically stable and strong enough in every part to make it safe and easy to fly. His biplane glider, developed and flown in the Indiana Dunes in the summer of 1896, proved to be a key step in the evolution of the flying machine. Believing that it could be the prototype for others, Chanute became the conduit of encouragement. In the next decade, almost every aeronautical enthusiast used the readily available drawings of the biplane glider to build one and then experience flying before introducing their skills and imagination to improve the design.

It was established to bridge the gap between a lack of cross-country capable club gliders and to help facilitate juniors’ ability to go off and race. With a generous donation, The Association has been able to acquire a Discus A which will be fully refinished and race ready for the 2025 season. The goal is to have a fleet of Sailplanes that are race-ready and to encourage others to donate and assist in getting a strong fleet of gliders available across the country.

How Many Thermals Can You Reach? Finding The Threshold for Gear Shifting – John Bird

OSTIV

Deciding when to “shift gears” between a focus on speed and a focus on staying airborne is challenging. It often seems that a soaring flight is going well until suddenly staying aloft is in doubt. Drawing an analogy between water seeping through coffee grounds and a sailplane flying between thermals, we can explain this experience mathematically. “Percolation theory” may offer a path to developing intuition and instrumentation for managing sporting risk.

IT FLIES MUCH BETTER IF IT’S BEAUTIFUL - Refinishing a 20+ year old fiberglass or carbon fiber glider– Rus Howard and Adam Kite

Presentations

The glider fleet in the US includes a significant number of good high-performance gliders that are getting “long in the tooth”. Refinishing can bring 30+ years of additional service life to a glider that has good flight characteristics and performance.
