US Soaring Team WGC Reports & Results

Yesterday the US team did quite well at the practice task. Garret Willat was able to complete task A and Mike Westbrook did all but the last turnpoint and only missed that by about 20K. Considering that at least half of the teams never left the field and very few were able to complete the task, they flew quite well. Flying to the first turn was difficult and both pilots got low with Mike recovering from a bit below 1000 feet. Since yesterday was an unofficial practice day it was not scored, but rumor has it that the British Team was the only other able to complete the task. I have included both SeeYou traces and they show that the task was a difficult one given the WX conditions (Mike is listed as Chris Luton the owner of his glider and Garret is listed as Richard Brown). Last night an occluded front moved through and we are in a clear and gusty airmass today. As usual the ceiling is forcast to be around 4500 feet, but there are CUs and they are forming streets. The task today goes to the south to Silverstone, continues further south to Didcot, then Northwest to Sackville and home to Husbands-Bosworth. If the altitude improves the pilots will have to take care to avoid a 5500 foot control zone as well as five neighboring active parachute zones. Mike had to relight as he was first off the grid and the towplane took him to a different area than the rest of his class. We will have to look into that!! Apart from that glitch the towing has been impressive with 8 tow-planes. Two are Wilgas which are very powerful, but look like a huge prehistoric grasshopper.

Today the organizers will score the flights so we will get some feedback for tomorrow. Until then...

Country and Contest Site

In 2005, The Soaring Centre, in association with the BGA, will be hosting the 5th Junior World Gliding Championships. This will be the first International gliding championships to be held in the UK in over a generation. The Soaring Centre, has with 400 members and a large fleet of modern glassfibre sailplanes.

Situated in the heart of the Midlands, the airfield is only 3 miles from the major motorway networks, and 1/2 mile from Husbands Bosworth village, making access easy from any part of the country.
