US Soaring Team WGC Reports & Results

Today we had the closing ceremony in a brisk British winds with thick clouds scudding by. The ceremonies were quite nice with winning pilots and teams accepting their prizes. Perhaps more important than the actual ceremonies was the closing party the night before. Rather than go into details I will just say that the US team more than held their own and perhaps were especially diligent at representing the USA in the category of intimate friendships. The friendships between all the pilots from every team was of course aided by a small bit of the local ale and other pleasant liquids.

The closing ceremonies began at 11:00 and most of the pilots actually were there on time. The rest did arrive looking somewhat the worse for wear before the end of the ceremonies. I am happy to say that the US team were present and accounted for on time although there was no consistency in the uniforms which seem to vary according to the artistic taste of each of the individuals.

As you can tell from the results on the contest website the British took the top three places in the Standard Class and at present they are the soaring force to be reckoned with and with the way they approach their team development they are likely to be on top for quite a while. Congratulations to them!!!

In summary, the US Team pilots flew very well and winning two days and one second is a significant accomplishment out of nine days of flying. Both Mike and Garret did well against the best of the Worlds Juniors and they should be congratulated on a job well done!!!!

Country and Contest Site

In 2005, The Soaring Centre, in association with the BGA, will be hosting the 5th Junior World Gliding Championships. This will be the first International gliding championships to be held in the UK in over a generation. The Soaring Centre, has with 400 members and a large fleet of modern glassfibre sailplanes.

Situated in the heart of the Midlands, the airfield is only 3 miles from the major motorway networks, and 1/2 mile from Husbands Bosworth village, making access easy from any part of the country.
