Giving to the WGC US Team has its Rewards

Over the years the US Teams have asked for your assistance in sending them to World Championships. This year, your reward for contributing was pretty exciting and definitely worth the shot at winning.

At the Reno SSA convention, many contributed to the US Team to have a chance to win a cross country flight in a Duo Discus with Rick Walters out at Minden.  What a great opportunity for some cross-country training with Rick. The winner of that flight was Reb Byrne of Horn Lake, Mississippi, and Reb will be taking that flight this summer

During the Seniors Contest in late March this year, Rich Owen and Virginia Thompson organized a wine, champagne and dessert party to benefit the US Teams. Lee Lauderback is the owner of Stallion 51, which specializes in flights and instruction in the P-51 Mustang.  Karl Streidieck asked Lee to consider donating a P-51 flight to benefit the US Teams and Lee very graciously agreed!  The value of this lesson is $3,500.00 for a one hour flight, and as the P-51 has dual controls,  the winner would get some flight time.

Raffle tickets were sold starting at the Seniors (after the champagne was served) and were available at several spring contests, and from the SSA office.  100 tickets were made available, of which 88 were sold.  Tickets were offered at several contests and thanks to the good graces of Lee Lauderback who lives and flies in Florida, pilots were anxious to get tickets and get lucky.

The winner of the P-51 ride was announced at the Sports Class Nationals in Midlothian, TX last week. The lucky winner happens to live in Florida so he won’t have a long drive to get to the ride -  Kevin Sorenson would normally be the lucky person flying high in a P-51. Congratulations to him.  Looking further, we learned that Kevin planned to give the P-51 ride to his 90 year old father who also lives in Florida.  Due to conflicts or health issues, Kevin offered the ride to his brother Ken Sorenson  and he accepted it in a nanosecond.

The US Team committee, pilots, crews, and others thank all the donors of prizes for the various fund raising events held this year.  It’s important to the team to have successful fund raising and both winners struck gold on their events.  A cross country flight in a Duo Discus would be superb; a lesson/flight in a P-51 would excite most any pilot.
