Data Plate Exemption
SSA'S DATA PLATE EXEMPTION TO FAR 45.11(a) AND (d)EXEMPTION 4988 REGULATORY DOCKET NO. 25588
As part of the FAA's drug smuggling interdiction efforts, FAR 45.11 requires aircrafts in the United States to display an external data plate bearing that aircraft's model number and serial number on its fuselage. Because of the unique structure and aerodynamics of sailplanes, and because gliders to not pose a significant drug-smuggling risk, SSA has been granted an exemption by FAA from FARs 45.11 (a) and (d). This Exemption was first issued on October 31, 1988 and has been renewed regularly since.
If gliders and motorgliders do not carry the external data plate, they must carry a copy of the Exemption and the current extension letter on board the aircraft. Accordingly, the pages reproduced below are the exemption and the current extension letter. These must be carried in each sailplane or motorglider operating in accordance with the Exemption.
The most recent extension is Exemption 4988E which (unless sooner rescinded) is effective until October 30,2004.
