DATA PLATE EXEMPTION PETITION SUBMITTED, June 15, 2004

As part of the FAA's drug smuggling interdiction efforts, FAR 45.11 requires aircraft in the United States to display an external data plate bearing that aircraft's model number and serial number on its fuselage. Because of the unique structure and aerodynamics of sailplanes, and because gliders do not pose a significant drug-smuggling risk, SSA has been granted an exemption by FAA from FAR's 45.11 (a) and (d). This Exemption was first issued on October 31, 1988 and has been renewed regularly since.

This exemption expires on October 31, 2004, and the SSA submitted a petition to the FAA on June 15th to renew the exemption. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
