FAA Rules For Glider Right of Airport Access
The FAA has issued a notice of determination regarding the issues surrounding Riverside County's decision to close Hemet-Ryan airport to soaring operations. A copy of the determination is here.
In response to the formal complaint filed by the Orange County Soaring Association (OCSA) et. al., the FAA has determined that Riverside County “is in violation of Federal Law and Federal grant obligations” and has directed the County to:
(1) provides glider operators access to the airport; (2) negotiates in good faith with those entities desiring to provide glider-related commercial aeronautical services; 3)........
This ruling reinforces and expands on the favorable interpretations that the FAA issued earlier this year regarding glider operations at airports, located here, and will serve to further define what the FAA considers to be safe and acceptable practices at airports conducting glider operations.
The SSA acknowledges the efforts of the OCSA and others for their work in pursuing this ruling.
