SSA Creates Security Documents

SSA Develops New Security Guidelines

In the wake of the September 11th attack there have been many discussions within the government about how to prevent future terrorist tragedies. Obviously much of the discussion has focused on the aviation industry and how to prevent airplanes from becoming weapons again. SSA developed two key documents as part of the discussion process. For gliding one of our biggest issues is to make sure that we are not swept into a multitude of new laws intended to control terrorist activities when, in fact, gliding presents no real threat. To this end we have developed a document that sets forth the real nature of our activities and the non-threat we pose. This document may be used when talking to local law enforcement officials, local airport authorities or even members of the press.

The second document that has been created is a set of guidelines that can be adopted by your commercial operation or club. These guidelines have been developed with assistance from an SSA member who is an FBI professional. By adopting these voluntary guidelines it is hoped that gliding operations can avoid mandatory rules and regulations that may not be user friendly in terms of how we need to operate.
