Meeting of the IGC Plenary

The annual meeting of the International Gliding Commission took place in Lausanne, Switzerland on March 2-3, 2007. The United States was represented by Eric Mozer (Delegate) and Rick Sheppe (Alternate). Also making reports were Francois Pin (World Class Committee), Bernald Smith (ANDS Committee), and Hannes Linke (Barron Hilton Cup).

In addition to approving various Sporting Code rule changes, the Plenary awarded bids to Slovakia, Russia, and Hungary for future World and Continental Championships. We also created new committees to study the reorganization of glider classes at the "low-cost end" (Light, Ultralight, World Class, Microlight Motorglider).

Argentina has indicated an interest in hosting a Continental Championships in 2008. This would be the first such contest held outside Europe. Technically speaking, only pilots from South America would be allowed to enter. However, since there are so few gliding countries in South America, the contest organizers may seek an exemption from this rule and invite pilots from all of the Americas.

The Plenary voted to award the following for 2007:

  • Lilienthal Medal: Alan Patching, Australia
  • Pirat Gehriger Diploma: Brian Spreckley and Keith Nicholson, UK
  • Pirat Gehriger Diploma: Loek Boermans, Netherlands
  • Pelagia Majewska Medal: Ghislaine Facon, France
