Curt Lewis Appointed Illinois State Record Keeper

Rudy Kunda, long-time Illinois SSA State Record Keeper received a Soaring Society of America, Certificate of Appreciation, Saturday in recognition of his two decades of effort encouraging SSA members to fly cross-country for badges and records. Not only did Rudy maintain the state records and update them carefully, but he mentored newer glider pilots in the art of cross-country soaring and in the goals they could achieve.

Curt Lewis, sports class competitor with his L-33 Solo ("95") took over as Illinois Record Keeper from Rudy at a ceremony and cook-out meeting of the Windy City Soaring Association at Hinckley Airport, near Chicago. Curt remarked that he hopes to lead as many people as Rudy did to accomplish more with their sailplanes after solo.

In presenting the award to Rudy and appointing Curt, Region 7 Director and SSA Chairman Jim Short stated that there are many existing records that just need to be broken, and that today's new generation of higher performance sailplanes should make records attainable with the right kind of effort and guidance in how to handle the documentation.

Rudy, long-remembered for his long flights and excellent contest finishes in his Pegasus ("JA") and later with his ASW-27 ("1WK") signified his appreciation for the SSA award and offered to help Curt with his new task, and others with advice as they start on the road to awards, records and higher soaring achievements.
