FAA Issues Sport Pilot NPRM

The FAA has issued a new Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) concerning a new pilot certificate called the “Sport Pilot.†The license allows passenger carrying and other recreational activity in non-complex aircraft up to 1,232 pounds gross weight with a top speed of not more than 115 knots. The certificate requires less training than the Private Pilot. The NPRM also creates a new category of aircraft called "Light Sport Aircraft." SSA is closely evaluating the proposal to determine its potential effects, positive or negative, for soaring. The FULL TEXT of the NPRM is quite lengthy. SSA will offer an evaluation of the proposal in the coming days.
