No Ridge, No Wave, No Mountains!

On August 26, Joann B. Shaw of Hobbs, NM, thermalled her Nimbus 3/24.5 over the flat New Mexico and West Texas landscape for slightly over 1000 kilometers to claim her 1000 Km Diplome and two U.S. National Feminine Open free distance records. Her flight via a turn north of Dalhart, TX, and another south of Jal, NM, with a return to Hobbs required just under nine hours and at one point reached an altitude near 14,000 feet. Jo is the third woman in the U.S. and the eighth in the world to have flown 1000 Km, and her flight may prove to be the greatest distance yet flown from Hobbs by any soaring pilot.
