Following is the news release from the LBA concerning the presentation of the award to friess:

High Honor: "IVANS Gold Medal" Awarded to Heiko Frieß

The Soaring Society of America (SSA) has awarded the "Ivans Gold Medal" to Dipl.-Ing. Heiko Frieß, Division Head within the Type Certification Department of the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt Braunschweig. The award was presented to Heiko Frieß by the SSA President Larry Sanderson in the course of the seminar "Glider Technology in Germany".

"With this award the SSA wishes to acknowledge the years of national and international efforts made by Heiko Frieß for safety in soaring. Based on his responsibility for type certification in Germany, for the international standardization of airworthiness requirements and for many theoretical and practical research contracts, Heiko Frieß has considerably contributed to the improvement of the safety level of sailplanes", Sanderson praised the work of the LBA Division Head in his laudation before more than 100 soaring experts from Germany and from abroad. At the same time the SSA acknowledges by the Ivans Gold Medal, which the SSA awards for the first time, the good results of the cooperation between the German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt and the American Federal Aviation Administration.

The honor conferred on Heiko Frieß was one of the highlights of the one-day seminar "Glider Technology in Germany". For the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt it was a great success that so many high-ranking soaring experts from industry, research, aviation administration and associations had accepted the LBA invitation to Braunschweig in order to inform themselves during the seminar about the state of the art and the future of soaring technology by means of expert lectures, discussions, personal talks as well as an exhibition. The lecturers of the seminar were Prof. Loek M.M. Boermans, President of the "Organisation Scientifique et Technique du Vol à Voile" (OSTIV), Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Richard Eppler (Technical University Stuttgart), Gerhard Waibel (German Glider Manufacturers Association), Martin Sperber (TÜV Rheinland - Technical Control Board Rheinland), Prof. Dr. Ing. Wolf Röger (FH Aachen University of Applied Science) and Dr. Ing. Michael Rehmet (Fairchild-Dornier).
