John Gladding Dean

John Gladding Dean, 79, of Indianapolis and Harbor Springs, MI died July 23, 2001. He was born in Indianapolis and attended Purdue University.

He served three years in the Army Air Force as a fighter pilot, attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He worked for 40 years at Dean Bros. Pumps, Inc. in Indianapolis, the third generation of Dean men to do so and retired in 1983.

In Indianapolis he was past President of the Board of Associated Employers of America, a member of the Board of Directors of Senior Enterprises, Board of Directors of Indiana Vocational and Technical Education (Ivy Tech), treasurer of Indianapolis-Marion County Building Authority. He was a member of Kiwanis and a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs.

He had been soaring for 62 years, his "second love" after his family and was a past president on the board of Central Indiana Soaring Society, was SSAs Central Indiana District Governor.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara Wilde Dean, a daughter Louise Dean Somes and her husband Charles, a son Carl Wilde Dean and his wife Ann Butz Dean, five grandchildren Heather, Abby and Laura Dean, Dean Somes and Elizabeth Somes.

He enjoyed soaring, skiing, camping sailping, golf reading and spectator sports.

His first love was his family and he was surrounded by them during his final days in the hospital. He leaves with a completely fulfilled, healthy, happy and successful life.
