Region 5 North - Ending on a high note

An east wind is rarely a good omen for favorable soaring conditions, and we had this today for the final day of our contest.  The forecast called for another blue day with moderate lift to perhaps 4000’ and included a caution for mid- and high-level cloud cover intruding from the west.

But all this managed to yield a surprisingly good soaring day, albeit with some tricky areas that slowed many pilots and caused several outlandings.  Thus does the 2018 Region 5 North contest, much troubled by uncooperative weather, manage to end on a high note.

Our winners are Skip Pate (P8) in Sport class, Mike Smith (XM) in 15-Meter class, Rich Owen (ZO) in 18-Meter class and Dick Butler (DB) in Open class.

Rich Owen’s victory was convincing: he placed first on all 3 18-Meter tasks.  And it’s his second title of the year: he won the 2018 Senior Contest on his home turf in March.  He returns to Florida as part of the organizing team for – and a competitor in – the 2018 18-Meter Nationals, where he’ll certainly be reckoned among the favorites.
