Region 11 FAI Class - Smoky MAT

Wednesday morning and another soft forecast, though this time with less wind. An additional hazard was smoke from the Mariposa fire predicted to drift north as far as Truckee. The two together made any flights to the south out of the question and toward the north the heights were low enough to guarantee many landouts, so the task committee reluctantly called a MAT with Verdi Peak, Mt. Pluto, and Mt. Rose mandatory.

By grid time, there was significant smoke. L6 self launched as the sniffer, and reported reasonably strong lift of 5-7 knots, topping at 12,000 ft. so the task was on. Most of the gliders made the mandatory turns but conditions seemed to deteriorate from the moment that pre start condition report was made. Climbs more difficult to find and work and visibility worsening as well. Some pilots chose to finish well before the 2 hour minimum but many continued on to complete the task. On the preliminary score sheet, P7 seemed to have “smoked” the field, flying nearly 50% further than second place FV.

The delicious evening BBQ prepared by Chef Dodo was enjoyed by all. As the sun set the smoke cleared from the area leaving a starry sky and hopes for better weather tomorrow.
