Air Sailing Sports Class Contest - Day 1

The Region 11 Sports Contest at AirSailing, Nevada got off to a smokey start. A lightning strike brush fire in the Palomino Valley just south of the airport closed off all the traditional contest routes to the south, forcing Contest Director, John “JJ “ Sinclair to call a two hour MAT with Constancia as the first turnpoint. The contest field of thirteen includes several newcomers, a clutch of veterans, and five entries from the Air Force Academy, a lively and welcome addition of young cadets to our soaring company.

The day saw initial thermals to about 11,000, but as south-westerly winds increased to 17-20 knots, the lift grew more ragged forcing some contestants to shorten their day, and causing two landouts at Reno-Stead airfield. The day was won by a pair of newcomers, Brad Jackson and Jim Lee flying a Duo Discus and earning themselves 860 points in a contest day that was degraded by a number of incompletes and failures to finish. Second place went to a returning veteran, Jimmy Hamilton, who's won past contests four times, but is returning after an eleven year hiatus.
