Region 1 Contest - Final Report

The 2016 Region 1 Championships at Springfield Vermont ended Monday July 4 with Juan Mandelbaum (Z8)  taking the  overall Championship winning the Shapiro Trophy, and the award for Best Pilot on both first and second weekends. John Hansman (XA) finished very  strong including a decisive 1000 point victory on the last  day to finish in second place overall.  Hank Nixon ( K-21) who mentored 2 different Valley Soaring Juniors throughout the contest in his K-21  took third place.  Over 10 "first contest" entrants competed and all reported it to be a memorable and positive soaring experience.

It was also a very competitive race with less than 18 points separating positions 2 and 4 and a dead tie for 6th place.  All results are at the SSA site:

This was a remarkably successful event with great weather on 4 contest days only one of which was slightly devalued.  Only two of the 6 scheduled contest days were cancelled (one with all contestants in the air) but the cancellations brought few complaints and one cancelled day deemed too windy for the less experienced pilots still resulted in a great wave day for several entrants.

Contest days began with a 9:00 am "rookie school" presented by CD Roy Bourgeois, Adviser Hank Nixon and on one day by US Team Member Phil Gaisford. Scoring was done by Chris Giacomo, weather by Rick Roelke, tow operations by Walter Streidick with all overseen by Contest Manager Alasdair Crawford.  This team,  which had never worked together before, worked like they had been doing it for years.

4 tow planes complemented by an extraordinary group of cadets from the Catamount CAP squadron  consistently launched 24 contestants each day in 35 minutes or less.  Over 125 contest tows were launched  and near 20,000 km of cross country flying were accomplished all without  incidents or accidents of any type.

Everybody left with a smile and a sense that we had really pulled off a memorable event.
