Standard and 15 Meter Nationals - Trivia...For He's a Jolly Good Fellow

Who is the only person up on Harris Hill during this contest who competed in both the first Standard Nationals and the first 15m Nationals?

Several pilots flew both contests, but the only person here this week is HHSC’s very own John “Corky” Gill.  Corky, as 1Gulf, flew a Ka-6E in the 1970 Standard Nationals and an H-301 Libelle in the 1976 15m Nationals.  Corky isn’t competing in these Nationals, but he is up on the Hill every day, fixing whatever needs to be fixed, including our towplanes and tow ropes.  A couple of years ago, Corky was awarded the SSA Certificate of Appreciation for his outstanding service to the club and the NSM over the past 40+ years.

The write-ups for the first Standard and first 15m Nationals can be found in the October 1970 and November 1976 issues of Soaring Magazine.  Dig them out and take a trip down memory lane!
