Region 4 South - Daily report

In search of our second valid contest task, we came close today.  The forecast called for more of the same tantalizing weather of the past two days, that would probably not produce enough sun to sustain motorless flight.  But by grid time we had lots of sun on the ground, and pilot optimism was rampant.

The entire fleet was launched, and nearly all were able to sustain in weak lift that reached a bit over 4000’ MSL (that’s about 2700’ above the New Castle airfield).  But cloud cover increased, and all who tried to find lift to the north (toward the first task turnpoint) were soon scuttling back toward home.  So the day had to be scrubbed, and even those who stayed in the air and strove valiantly to prove that a task might have been possible were in the end forced to admit that this was the third straight untaskable day here.

Tonight’s dinner was hosted by Lanier and Thecla Frantz, in their beautiful home that overlooks the New Castle runway.  Particularly notable as you approach this house is a wide variety of flowers in bloom – enough to be impressive in springtime, and to stretch anyone’s eyes at this time of year.
