Region 3 Soaring Contest - Fri Aug 22 - FAI Day 5, Sports No Day

Unlike yesterday, the day was as forecast: hazy, hot, and humid.  There were cu in the morning but also thick high clouds that delayed significant heating until early afternoon.  It really, really looked like we wouldn’t get a day in.  Everyone delayed taping until the last minute.

Sniffers John Seymour [SM] and Tim Welles [W3] toiled away for close to an hour before the FAI Class was launched at 1330. For a long time, cloud base didn’t budge from 3500-4000ft and thermals were few and far between and weak to boot.  Once launched, the eight FAI pilots were up for yet another hour, struggling to get to cloud base, before the task was opened at 1500.

The original 2hr TAT was trimmed back to a 1.5hr MAT, mandatory first turnpoint choice of Loon Lake, Swain, Hornell, or Seven Gullies; then pilot’s choice after that.  Staying above 4000ft was the trick today and those who did that had no problems and experienced 4-5kt thermals.  The weather improved as the afternoon went on and, like yesterday, dry air moved in again later in the day.

Sean Murphy [XC], Erik Mann [P3], and John Seymour [SM] flew most of the course together and all came back with happy faces and tales of good soaring.  They placed 1-2-3 respectively today, Sean’s winning speed 54.45/47.97mph.  Overall, the New York State natives – Seymour, Welles, and Murphy – are in the top three positions and it’s anyone’s guess as to who will pull off the win (although you know who I'm rooting for!)

The Sports Class day was canceled at 1445 while they were still on the ground but many took a tow anyway. Dan Yates [FTW] and Roman Michalowski [U] were up for close to 3 hours and arrived back at the field just in time for dinner.

Tonight we ate our final meal at the airport: pulled pork and more delicious salads and desserts from the FLSC ladies.  We have some visitors in for the weekend: Moe and Sophie Acee, Corky Gill, and Ted and Nancy Haller. Although a bit more humid, it’s a pleasant summer evening here at Dansville.
