Region 10 South - The HEAT is on

Region 10 South begins today with the gathering of 28 gliders from as far away as South Carolina!  Pilots, their families and crews began gathering last Thursday to participate in the first Regionals to be held at the home of The Soaring Club of Houston, second largest in the nation.

The Club's airfield lies 45 miles NW of Houston, surrounded by country homes and cattle ranches.  The 80 acre site comprises a large club house, for dinners and pilots meetings, a 4,000 ft grass runway wide enough for towplanes and three rows of gliders to launch and land safely.  A small ridge lies to the north in the otherwise flat landscape.

Army Warrant Officer and Chinook pilot, Sylvia Szafarczyk, has returned to her home field to compete in her Libelle.  After landing out on the first practice day, husband and crew, Hugh Grandstaff promised champagne if she completed Sunday's task.  Smiles all around when he popped the cork for a third place finish.

After two practice days that had to meld into club activity, the pilots are ready to get started.
