Region 3 - Practice Day

Region 3 - Harris Hill - Elmira NY
July 27 - Practice Day

Greetings from Elmira NY and the 2013 Region 3 contest!  The Harris Hill Soaring Corp is all ready to go, with Sean Murphy (CM) and Jacquie Doherty (CD) leading the effort.  We have a good turnout, ~35 contestants.

Friday's weather was good enough for early arrivals to fly for a few hours and tour the task area. Today, however, was a different story. A front is working its way east and the sky was completely overcast by noon.  Several pilots took tows but were back on the ground within a half hour.  Pilots and crews took advantage of the down time to take care of any remaining contest preparations and catch up with friends.

HHSC sponsored a Welcome Reception at the Youth Camp this evening.  We also celebrated the life of Clarence See, who passed away this past winter.  Clarence was a quiet, gentle person and a true renaissance man – farmer, mechanic, test pilot, corporate pilot, instructor, sportsman, carpenter, devoted family man.  He knew everything there was to know about planes and aviation and he knew how to apply that knowledge.  There were numerous stories illustrating his expertise in refurbishing power planes and gliders or helping with a quick (but always thorough and well done) fix.  A soaring pioneer, he and wife Betty were part of the sport for seven decades.  Their ashes were spread on the Hill, a place they both loved.  We all feel very fortunate to have known Clarence and Betty.

It started raining around 8 this evening and we expect the rain to continue into Sunday. Tomorrow will most likely be a no contest day, but the rest of the week looks promising.
