Region 9 Moriarty - First Contest Day

Monday was the first contest day.  For the FAI at Classes (Standard, 15 Meter, and 18 Meter) the task committee called a Turn Area Task with a minimum time of 3.5 hours and turn points at San Cristobal (radius 15 mi) , Monte Alto (radius 25 mi), and Mountainair (radius 15 mi).  For the Sports Class the TAT had a minimum time of 3 hours and turn points at Tierra de Dios (radius 15 mi) , Corona (radius 15 mi), and Mountainair (radius 15 mi).

Although the air mass was drier than Sunday, overdevelopment and scattered showers late in the afternoon produced a series of gust fronts that moved across the airfield.  As a result, the Contest Director called for a safety finish.

Preliminary results for the Standard class have Bill Hill as the winner with 959 points for a speed of 75.47 mph over a distance of 267 miles.  In the 15 Meter class Jim Cumiford took the lead with 1000 points for a speed of 79.00 mph over a distance of 275.15 miles.  Ken Sorenson led the pack in the 18 Meter class with 975 points for a speed of 76.04 mph over a distance of 265.90 miles.  And in the Sports class Jim Payne finished first with 1000 points for a handicapped speed of 69.80 mph over a distance of  205.71 miles.
