Region 9 Moriarty - First Practice Day

Saturday was a practice day.  For the FAI at Classes (Standard, 15 Meter, and 18 Meter) the task committee called a Turn Area Task with a minimum time of 3.5 hours and turn points at Ortiz Mine, Manzano Peak, and Goat Mountain.  For the Sports Class the TAT had a minimum time of 3 hours and turn points at Ortiz Mine, Manzano Peak, Gallinas Peak and Willard.

Out on course, pilots reported 10 knots climbs to 15700 mixed with mediocre climbs at 1-2 knots.  Conditions at the first turn point were soft.  The convergence was working, but many pilots failed to connect or ended up on the wrong side of the mountains.  Pilots who stayed on top of the mountain ridge reported the best conditions.

Those who made the final turnpoint found 13-14 knot thermals, but soft conditions on the course home.

One co-pilot cleared out the terminal building when he arrived to turn in his data logger carrying two full blue air sickness bags.
