Region V West - Day 2 Report

Since Saturday was rained out, Sunday is Day 2.  Francois called the pilot’s meeting to order and Bob Richards shared some very good points concerning land outs.  Although the morning sun was partially obscured by low clouds and fog, the weather improved rapidly and the field began to launch as scheduled.  Starting altitudes were generally above 4000 feet MSL and contestants had some clouds to follow to the first turn point Rostex about 19 miles away.  The CD had issued an Area Task with 3 turn points, Rostex, Corntassel, Hardwick and return to Chilhowee.  Each turnpoint had a 10 mile radius.  With a tailwind and good markers the run south was fast and the return north seemed to pose no problems.  Later in the day as the field headed for the last turn point, the lift softened and the clouds became more scarce.  Three contestants returned to finish in less than minimum time and five landed out.  Only Fernado Silva, (FS) finished on time and was the winner for the day and for the contest overall.

A good contest that brought friends together and provided a challenge for their flying skills.  Our thanks to Sarah, Jason, Francois, Tom and Sandy, Dakota and all our tow pilots for a great time and good flying.
