18 Meter/Standard Class Nationals - Contest Day 4

We woke to cloud and light rain this morning but looking South the sky is clear blue. I can hear the task committee reviewing the weather to see when it will clear up.

Yesterday after the gliders returned, five aerial tankers came in. They are firefighting down  in Scott Valley. The fire produced a strong thermal. From the airfield we could see the smoke drifting North East. We are currently waiting to hear whether they need to operate today and if any TFRs are declared.

Day 1 scores are now official.

A bit on the tow operations here:

Towing is carried out with three pawnees. Tow pilots are Rex Mayes, Rich Beardsley and Pete King. Chatting to Rich Beardsley, I discovered that he was involved in commercial aviation as well as flying in pylon racing, retiring from it a few years ago. He hold a Smiths Mini Plane speed record but is towing at a more measured pace!

More after briefing.
