Sports Class Nationals - Practice Day 1 Midday Report

Today saw the opening of the National Sports Class Championship of 2012 held at Parowan Airport, Parowan, Utah.  

Registration began last night, Sunday, 17 June, 2012, from 6 pm to 8 pm, and continued this morning at 8 am until the Pilot's Meeting at 10 am.  During the Pilot's Meeting, Contest Manager, Larry Knauer, gave an opening address.  Mike "the Strike" Stringfellow, Contest Weatherman and Sniffer, gave a weather report .  He reporteds, a slight chance of clouds over the mountains, surface winds 20kt southwest, bp of lift 20 to 30kt west to southwest, and maximum temperatures in the high 80s.  Not a very favorable day for soaring.  

Gridding began at 11 am, and launch began at 12:30 pm.  By 1:15 pm, thirteen pilot's were in the air.  The start gate opened at 1:30 pm.  

Today's practice task began with Start Gate D.  The first turn point was Milford with a 15 mile radius.  Then, Wskykn with at 15 mile radius.  The final turn point was at Panqitch with an 18 mile radius.  The total cumultive distance was 193.36 miles.  Minimun distance possible was 137.73 mi. Nomnitive distance: 193.756 mi.  Maximum distance 265.29 mi.  

Pilot's were offered an alternate 3 hr MAT.
