Region 5 West - Day 3 Report

Sunday Sept 11

After a week of rain, this weekend of fantastic soaring weather was a welcome change. Pilots saw 4 knot averages with climbs to over 7000' along the high ground.

Our morning forecast the last two days looked optimistic for the northern portion of Walden's ridge. Both days Francois called  Turn Area Tasks using Pikeville Switch, a turnpoint in the northern third of the Sequatchie Valley. Much to the relief of some of our newer pilots, both days before the start Francois saw signs of spreadout in that direction and changed to Task B.

Today Task B was a regular Chilhowee milk run: north to  Corntassel near the Tennessee River, south along the high ground east of Chilhowee and beyond to Dalton with a 15 mile circle, then back north to finish out the mileage with 10 miles around McMinn County Airport.

Fernando Silva found the winning combination for his third consecutive daily win securing his title as the Region V West Champion.

Out of 8 pilots, we had 4 first-time competitors. The pilots expressed their happiness with the format of this contest. Everybody was pleased with the team-flying allowed by waiver at this competition and the new pilots said that they felt more comfortable flying their first contest while in communication with more experienced mentors. They were all pleased with the economics made possible by this weekend contest. Nobody had to take time off work, and the fees were incredibly reasonable. The $200 registration fee included their first tow and dinners on both Saturday evenings.

We look forward to hosting Region V West annually here at Chilhowee. In the meantime - COME FLY!
