Region V West - Day 2 Report

Uvalde may be famous for tubing on the Frio River, but Chilhowee is endowed with  two great rivers. The Hiwassee will do for tubing and floating serenely through the woodlands, while the Ocoee offers  white water for a raft trip. Then there’s hiking in the Cherokee National Forest (which is why no tasks go east from Chilhowee). If your family isn’t into the outdoors, there is Gatlinburg and Dollywood within a couple of hours.

Colin Meade’s fiancé, Cindy, took a raft trip with her daughter today. That may be why Colin (C5) is getting aero retrieve from the last turnpoint at Rostex.

There were no landouts yesterday, but today the two GTA “B” class pilots, Colin and Lane Bush, landed early. The day was more of a mixed bag than the day before. The required gear changing was much to the delight of the CD.

Tim McGowen (2EZ) reported lift of up to 7 knots that went up to 7,000 msl on the plateau east of the Sequatchie Valley. But there was some strong sink and dead-air runs as well. The course went north to Monroe with a 5-mile circle, then west to Pikeville Switch with at 15-mile circle and back east to Rostex, 5- mile area, before coming home.

There was less wind today which made it a little harder to figure out how the terrain would help.

Tonight Francois Pin is making poulet basquaise, and will feed the whole group from one big pot. The aroma is wafting out to the porch and stoking appetities.

Labor Day is tomorrow and we expect another good day before the break.
