Region 8 Championships - Day 4 Report

July 3 – Contest Day 4

The classic Ephrata day was forecast and with only 2 towplanes, the first launch was scheduled for before noon (launch took only 73 minutes for 19 gliders).  The sky at launch was full of cumulus clouds with bases at 6-7,000 ft in all quadrants.  The forecast was for 4-6 kts with bases in the 7-8,000 ft ranges.  A 3-hr TAT was called for both classes from Ephrata to Creston (15 mi), Mansfield (15 mi), Kramer Ranch (20 mi) and return.  Lift on course averaged 5-6 kts with some 9-10 kts to 10,000 ft in the Mansfield area.

In the Sports Class, Brian Case, flying an HP-16T, won the day with a raw/handicapped speed of 59/61 mph over a distance of 196 mi.  In the 15m/Std Class, Branko Stojkovic, flying a Discus b, won the day flying 216 mi. at 68 mph.

Winning the day lifted Brian over the rest of the Sports Class, winning the Sports Class contest.  Mike Newgard, with a second for the day, won the 15m/Std Class contest.

The awards dinner was held on the deck of the SGC Clubhouse in the evening.  Special attention was given to the enormous crew of volunteers that helped put this on.  Thanks to Steve Northcraft (Contest Manager/Weather); Ron Bellamy (CD); Jim Simmons (Ops Mgr);  Nelson Funston (Scorer); towpilots Linda Chisolm, Bill Burney, Angus McKinnon, Michael Moore and Chris Klix; line crew Tom Newgard, Michael Case, Chris Klix and a multitude of others; Becky and Mike Newgard for two great dinners supporting the SGC Foundation; and any others I’ve forgotten to mention.
