Region V South - Practice Day One

Greetings from the 39th Annual Region 5 South Soaring Contest in Cordele, Georgia.  This long-running soaring event is proudly sponsored by the Mid-Georgia Soaring Association.

Today the wind was out of the southwest, so our first practice day began with a much-loved Cordele traditon:  the mile long "Elephant Walk" all the way to the far end of the airport to grid on Rwy 23.  This was not all bad, however, as the breeze  kept the gnats in check.

17 pilots flew and found soft lift of 2-3 knots to a high of 3,600 feet.  The final six returned as two thunderstorm cells approached from the west.  With everyone on the box, the cells provided 30 minutes of entertainment for those of us who enjoy the power of a good thunderstorm.

Gonna be soggy tomorrow.
