Region 2 - Mifflin County Airport - Day 4 Report

Hi race fans,

First I have to say that contest reporting this year has been tough to find time for. I apologize for the lateness of some of these reports. Things really get moving at the field and before you know it the next days launch is upon us and no report done. Something to improve on next year.

Saturday started with our usual 9:30 pilot’s meeting and talks from yesterday’s winners. Standard class was P3, Eric Mann, 15 M 18H John Banarhall, 18M Doug Jacobs, and Sports Tom Beltz. There were many awes as Tom stood and told of how he managed to get around the course on a day that was not nearly as good as yesterday, and had a very problematic leg at Penns Cave. It is amazing to watch how easily he still finds his way around a sky full of sometimes mistaken markers! I talked with a few other pilot’s who had flown miserably on Day 3, only to have much better luck on a much weaker day 4. Go figure!

We had a few more land outs today, but still not an enormous amount and all returned to the homedrome intact and ready for the next day.

At the end of the day we topped it all off with what has become a Mifflin tradition, the annual fish fry. This tradition was started some 10 years ago when a few towpilots and groundcrew were having dinner in the EAA hanger. KS happened along, sat down and we gave him a sample of what we were eating. He tried this out and a few weeks later called and asked me if my Dad would prepare this meal for everyone the following year. He agreed, and it has been a regular event. Much work goes into the preparation and I can take credit for none of it. My father and mother, Gene & Peggy Glick, and several locals prepare it all. Noted thanks go out to Al Nearhood, Roy Stine, Paul & John Weeden, all for their help in "fish prep". Believe me, you do not want to hear what this involves.

Today looks like a no fly day, but the CD has other ideas. He has declared a launch and hang out mission to see if something breaks our way. I will post all this in the contest wrap up.
